About Barns Cottage

We bought Barns in 2005, it having been left unoccupied for several years. Despite the crumbling walls, failing roof and general feel of dilapidation, we could see the potential to restore this house into the home we know and love today.

We inverted the house by moving the lounge and kitchen upstairs into an open-plan area and moved two of the bedrooms downstairs. We then backfilled the yard which was mainly hard rock, to the level of the upstairs floor and created the large outdoor patio area and raised diases.

We also imported a large amount of stone from a Welsh quarry and over several months of cutting and placing, built the drystone fireplace and outside walls.

We have turned an old farm barn into a contemporary dwelling that has open ceilings and polished wooden floors. Despite the clean lines and uncluttered space, Barns retains a cosy feel due to the underfloor heating, suspended fireplace and large slouchy pink couch. All this makes it an attractive destination all year round.
